Language of the day
Four-year-olds ask why about everything. In the Owls class we work with monthly projects: "Where does water go?", "How is bread made?", "What do birds eat in winter?" Each project starts with a question, is tried out in the garden, the kitchen and the classroom, and is shared with families in a small exhibition at the end of the month.
One side of each project runs in Turkish and the other in English. Zeynep deepens the question in Turkish; Liam brings the English song, game and word cards for the same project. At this age most children begin to make short English sentences and mix the two languages within a sentence. This is a normal stage of bilingual development.
Instead of a nap there is a rest and quiet reading time after lunch; a bed is always ready for any child who wants to sleep.
What we work on this year
- Following a question to the end, guessing and testing
- Making short English sentences: I want…, Can I…?, Look!
- Telling events in order in Turkish: first, then, finally
- Using scissors, brushes and glue with control
- Making rules in group games and following them
The class teachers
One Turkish side, one English side. Both are in the classroom all day.
